Lisa Rayner lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico at 7,000 feet elevation at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the Rio grande Rift. Lisa formerly lived in Flagstaff, Arizona, also at 7,000 feet, from 1987 to 2016 at the base of San Francisco Mountain in the San Francisco Volcanic Field on the Colorado Plateau.
Lisa is an author, activist and artist with interests in the climate emergency, planetary eco-boundaries, eco-justice, eco-ableism, economic justice, neurodivergence, LGBTQIA2S+ rights, and weaving wearable art. Lisa is disabled, actually autistic, and non-binary. They have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder. They also have multiple health issues related to EDS that affect breathing.
Lisa learned to weave from their mother as a child. Lisa designs weaving patterns for freeform overshot and wearable art yarn fabrics. They opened their Etsy shop in 2013. In 2015, their spiral freeform overshot Mermaid Scarf appeared on the cover of the Nov/Dec issue of Handwoven magazine.
Lisa has long had an interest in the natural world. As a young person, Lisa spent much time exploring the forests and beaches of their Delaware home. They had a natural history museum in their closet, collecting sea shells, rocks, bird feathers and more.
Lisa has a 1991 Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resource Interpretation from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona. They are a graduate of the 1993 Black Mesa Permaculture Project’s Design Certification Course and 1994 Coconino County (Arizona) Master Gardener Program. In 1995 they became a sourdough baker, a solar cook, and a co-organizer of the eco-justice non-profit Friends of Flagstaff’s Future.
In 1996, Lisa published the 60-page first edition of Growing Food in the Southwest Mountains. They published the first editions of The Sunny Side of Cooking solar cookbook in 2007, Wild Bread sourdough baking in 2009, and The Natural Canning Resource Book in 2010.
They taught solar cooking workshops at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff for a number of years. Lisa was a permaculture design course co-teacher at Northern Arizona University from 2005 to 2010. They ran Juniper Street Community Garden from 2005 to 2009. In 2010 Lisa served on the City of Flagstaff Rainwater Harvesting Committee.
Lisa served on the boards of Friends of Flagstaff’s Future and PFLAG Flagstaff from 1997 to 2011. In 2008, Lisa co-organized Planned Parenthood support rallies. They were a co-organizer of a PFLAG-sponsored social justice project to convince the City of Flagstaff to enact a civil rights ordinance that included sexual orientation and gender identity from 2007 to 2013. Lisa also worked through PFLAG to convince Flagstaff United School District to adopt a safe schools/anti-bullying program that explicitly included sexual orientation and gender identity in 2011.
