Permaculture gardening & cookbooks

Lisa Rayner has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico at 7,000 feet elevation at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the Rio grande Rift. Lisa has also lived in Flagstaff, Arizona, also at 7,000 feet, at the base of San Francisco Mountain, San Francisco Volcanic Field, Colorado Plateau.

Lisa learned to weave from their mother as a child. Lisa designs weaving patterns for freeform overshot designs. They opened their Etsy shop in 2013. In 2015, their spiral freeform overshot Mermaid Scarf appeared on the cover of the Nov/Dec issue of Handwoven magazine.

Lisa has long had an interest in the natural world. As a young person, Lisa spent much time exploring the forests and beaches of their Delaware home. They had a natural history museum in their closet, collecting sea shells, rocks, bird feathers and more.

Lisa has a 1991 Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Interpretation, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona. They are a 1993 graduate of Black Mesa Permaculture Project’s Design Certification Course and 1994 Coconino County Master Gardener Program. In 1995 they became a sourdough baker, solar cook, and co-organizer of Friends of Flagstaff’s Future.

In 1996, Lisa published the 60-page first edition of Growing Food in the Southwest Mountains. They published the first editions of The Sunny Side of Cooking solar cookbook in 2007, Wild Bread sourdough baking in 2009, and The Natural Canning Resource Book in 2010.

They taught solar cooking workshops at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff for a number of years. Lisa was a permaculture design course co-teacher at Northern Arizona University from 2005 to 2010. They ran Juniper Street Community Garden from 2005 to 2009. In 2010 Lisa served on the City of Flagstaff Rainwater Harvesting Committee.
